Centered on the collection of the Hosokawa family, an Edo-period daimyo clan that ruled over the Kumamoto domain, the Eisei Bunko Collection possesses many examples of outstanding art from throughout Japanese history. Among the highlights of this extensive collection are works of painting and calligraphy acquired from Zen monks, notably the great Edo-era collection of Ekaku Hakuin.
