Front and Back – Murals of the Shikidai

Nijo Castle

poster for Front and Back – Murals of the Shikidai

This event has ended.

The Shikidai is a small, narrow hall connecting the Tozamurai, which is the entryway to Ninomaru-goten Palace, to the Ohiroma (Great Hall), the central building of the palace. The Shikidai-no-ma on the south side of the Shikidai is the connector to the Ohiroma and features large pines painted on a dazzling golden background that stretches all the way to the ceiling. The Roju-no-ma on the north side of the Shikidai was, as its name suggests, an office for roju (members of the shogun’s council of elders), and its plain stucco walls above the horizontal beams and its murals of flowers and birds of the four seasons elicit a gentle elegance. The south and north walls of the Shikidai represent the front and back of the palace, respectively, and are placed across from each other in this summer exhibit to demonstrate the completely different worlds they created within the Shikidai.
