“The Battle of Cascina” is an unfinished fresco painted by Michelangelo on a wall of the Salone dei Cinquecento in Florence’s Palazzo Vecchio. Though preliminary drawings and compositional cartoons were produced and subsequently replicated by several artists, the complete painting according to Michelangelo was never able to be seen. On the opposite wall was Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Battle of Anghiari,” an incomplete mural which was abandoned by Da Vinci. For over half a century, parts of this original fresco were on show until a renovation of the hall by Giorgio Vasari in 1560 rendered this painting lost.
Displayed in this exhibition are two recreations believed to depict the central section of “The Battle of Anghiari” - the “Tavola Doria,” the oldest representation of Leonardo’s original made in the 16th Century, and a wood-panel replica of ‘Battle of Cascina’. This exhibition provides a comprehensive introduction to this mysterious masterpiece, with accompanying sketches, reproductions, and related documents.
*This exhibition is held on the 3F and 4F special galleries at the Museum of Kyoto.
