The Ryukyu Kingdom of Okinawa boasts a rich culture of dyed and woven textiles. From the vivid, distinctive colors of bingata textiles developed for the Ryukyu dynasty to thread-woven Bashofu fabrics, these diverse patterns and designs have delighted many. This exhibition presents some 50 examples of Okinawan textiles from the Japanese Traditional Dyeing and Weaving Promotion Foundation, including works by Eiki Shiroma, who was behind the postwar revival of bingata dyeing, bashofu fabrics by the Living National Treasure Toshiko Taira, and shuri weavings by Hatsuko Miyahara, another Living National Treasure.
