Focusing on the artwork and personal possessions of the people and institutions that helped modernize Japan during the turbulent Bakumatsu (end-Edo) period when the Tokugawa Shogunate fell and during the Meiji Restoration. Swords and colored woodblock prints from the Mitsui family on public display for the first time and a wealth of documents related to Ryuma Sakamoto and the Shinsengumi (Bakufu police force) are among the exhibits revealing the spirit of the Japanese people.
