This event has ended.

Shigeru Izumi, who formed the avant-garde art group Democratic Artists Association with Ei-Q in 1951, was almost entirely self-taught as an etching and lithograph artist. Still, he received the New Comer Award at the first International Biennial Exhibition of Prints in Tokyo in 1957, attracting attention with the poetic style and outstanding expressions of his prints. He then spent approximately a decade in New York and Paris broadening his practice from prints to oil paintings, creating works that emphasized discovery over pursuit. He resumed his printmaking after returning to Japan with a further-evolved style of distinct geometrical patterns detached from literary elements. This exhibition introducing around 80 of Izumi’s prints from the 1950s through the 1990s explores his thoughtful creativity and diverse artistry. Oil paintings (blue and white street scenes) from Izumi’s time in New York and Paris that have never before been exhibited in Japan are also on display with the cooperation of Izumi’s wife and the Osaka University of Arts Junior College. Rediscover the prints and paintings of this Kansai postwar contemporary artist on the 20th anniversary of his death.
