The Insho-Domoto Museum of Fine Arts holds an annual exhibition which takes a historical look at work that arose from art schools in Kyoto. This year features Kyoto City University of Arts, which was established in 1880 and is the oldest art college in Japan. It has continued to play an important role in providing a liberal environment that fosters art research and creative practices, in the context of Kyoto’s particular forte of combining tradition and innovation.
This exhibition follows the development of modern “nihonga” with masterpieces from the collection of the University Art Museum, Kyoto City University of Arts. Divided into two parts, the first half displays work by teaching staff at the university. In the long history of the faculty, there are a number of artists who have become synonymous with Japanese modern art, including recipients of the Order of Cultural Merit. This provides viewers with an opportunity to consider the creative educational environment through a display of Japanese-style paintings, and work by teaching staff from other departments such as “yoga” and crafts. The second half features graduates from the “nihonga” department, such as Tsuchida Bakusen and Kagaku Murakami, representatives of the art circle in Kyoto. We can also see work by artists who, for different reasons, such as dying at a relatively young age, are less well known, despite their promising talent.
Alongside these works are sketches and drawings by Insho Domoto, who graduated from and taught at the Kyoto Municipal Special School of Painting, which he created during his time there, both as a student and member of the teaching faculty. Work donated by Insho to the Kyoto City University of Arts is also on display, enabling us to look back at the relationship between Insho and his alma mater.
