This event has ended.

Introducing masterpieces of embroidery featured at two of Japan’s major festivals acclaimed for their artistry, Kyoto’s Gion Matsuri and Nagasaki’s Nagasaki Kunchi. Among the displayed items are gorgeous embroidered textiles that adorn the Nagimata Hoko, the leading mikoshi float of the Gion Matsuri, and works demonstrating the sublime techniques of Nagasaki embroidery. This exhibition looks at the skill that goes into creating these amazingly delicate yet bold works, while also spotlighting the efforts of people dedicated to preserving them and passing on the roots and soul of these art forms. Other displays present spectacular embroidered men’s clothing worn in European palaces during the 18th century Rococo era, gold and silver embroidered dresses, and embroidered haute couture dresses from early 20th century Paris.
