What is Transgutic?
“Gutic” is a temporary name adopted to describe a certain form which seems to exist, and does not exist. I draw a line and remove it on screen many times, reclaiming them carefully, hesitantly. In this way, the things that appear on the screen seem to symbolize “another reality” that let them embody “the possibility that this might be it”. Whenever they insist on their distorted existence, I feel a sense of incongruity, tracing the absurdity of a world I cannot avoid. The word “Trans” is a prefix used with the meanings “across,” “beyond,” “through” or meaning “…on the other side of.” There is also a scientific term “transformer” which means to change one’s form.
An ambiguous yet thought-provoking solo exhibition by Toshiaki Yamaoka.
