Seishu Niihira “Windows Upset”
The first solo exhibition by Seishu Niihira, who looks to question the principles of paintings themselves and the act of observing them, and to manifest and amplify the ambiguities and uncertainties present in their images. His works that focus on the schizophrenic effects that occur between the screen and the mind are spread through his online activities and communication. The result is experienced on a daily basis in today’s era, one where the virtual and real space-times are continuously mixed together and accumulate to give us a multi-dimensional feeling of reality. And, the space-time of the paintings, which is never truly grounded but forever floating on the screen, enables us to “image” and “observe”, without ever being visible itself. It gives us a glimpse into the underlying structure of the world of vision, and maybe has the power to even unsettle the very existence of paintings. This exhibition takes as its key concept the window, which Niihira considers the medium that best expresses the complexity of images, and shows off a series of his new experimental creations, created solely in monochrome and fluorescent colours.
