The contemporary pursuit of “Japanese beauty” was alive and well during the Edo era, a time when new aesthetic principles still observable today rose out of the country’s period of seclusion. This series introduces contemporary artists who strive for this kind of Japanese beauty in their works. Part 1 presents the paintings of Masanori Mimasu, an artist whose contemporary works fills temples, museums, and other spaces built in Japanese style. New paintings are among the displayed works.
