Musical Films in Posters

The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto

poster for Musical Films in Posters

This event has ended.

An exhibition of musical film posters organized by the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, the National Film Center, and the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. Musical films were highly developed in Hollywood when talkie technology was introduced, and they held sway as one of the main forms of 20th Century mass entertainment. This exhibition follows the glamorous lineage of the genre, from the pre-war RKO musicals that brought us the genius of tap dancer Fred Astaire, to the MGM musicals that peaked in the 1950s with actors like Gene Kelly, and the big-scale productions of the 1960s. These 54 original posters are mainly from the collection of illustrator/designer Makoto Wada, together with rare items from the eminent musical film poster collector Yasuhiko Oyama.
