With startling imagination and superb skill, the solitary genius Chihiro Watanabe created masterpieces of engraving. Surrealist works from early in Watanabe’s career feature corrugated textures created with a burin chisel and carved wavelike patterns that grow, expand, and transform endlessly. The mezzotint prints of the artist’s late years are marked by otherworldly expressions evoking light flooding into a dark room.
