Hozan Matsumoto (1925–2010) painted landscapes from not just Japan but around world, bringing new life to the field of ink painting. She loved scenes featuring water, and in addition to “One Hundred Scenes of Lake Biwa,” a series that ran in the Mainichi newspaper, she left behind several works depicting the Shimanami Kaido expressway linking Japanese islands from Onomichi to Ehime from the time of the road’s opening. On display is a selection of works from Matsumoto’s “Mizu Kiko” (Water Travels) series, which impressed a Mainichi newspaper director as an artistic a labor of love.
