With a wealth of history and culture, Wakayama has produced many great artists in both Japanese-style Nihonga painting and contemporary genres. Furthermore, the scenic landscapes of the prefecture have often been subjects of Nihonga paintings. Works mainly from the Museum of Modern Art, Wakayama’s collection by artists with ties to Wakayama and their contemporaries demonstrate the beauty of contemporary Nihonga combining the traditional and innovative.
