Unkei “Fudou Hachidai Douji” Kamakura Period

This event has ended.

2015 marks the 1200th year since the founding of Mt. Koya, a sacred ground for Buddhism and the birthplace of one of the most remarkable collections of Buddhist art. Several of Mt. Koya’s most precious treasures, including statues, paintings, and writings invaluable to the roots of the Shingon sect and Esoteric Buddhist art are on display in this exhibition. Of particular note is the sculptor Unkei’s Kamakura-era National Treasure “Fudou Hachidai Douji” in its entire form, which ushered in a new style of Buddhist sculpture.
