This event has ended.

An exhibition of a selection from the Sumitomo family’s Chinese calligraphic works and paintings, focusing on works from the Ming and Qing dynasties. In the Ming dynasty traditional calligraphy expanded from the Imperial Court to the people. In time, many unique stand-out works emerged from the newly developing cities. After the change of dynasty to the Qing era, a huge variety of representation rarely seen in history was born, from orthodox works to highly individual ones. Of these, the works of Bada Shanren, Shitao and, who lived during the tumultuous period transcending the two dynasties, and which showcase their intense sense of self and subtle touch, are at the core of the Sumitomo collection. From paintings depicting magnificent flowers and birds to mystical mountains and rivers, as well as carefree calligraphy, we invite to enjoy the works of the Ming and Qing dynasties – the age of diversity.
