Yokai in 3D - Yokai Paradise Japan, Part II
Hyogo Prefectural Museum of History
This event has ended.
As yokai became popular supernatural creatures among urban residents during the Edo period, many yokai drawings, toys, and entertainment featuring yokai were created. However, many of them were two-dimensional because three-dimensional representations of yokai were strongly considered as a taboo. The advent of collectors of figurines in the late modern era, however, changed the attitude towards three-dimensional representations, and this led to the production of various 3D yokai figures.
Our Special Exhibition, Yokai Paradise Japan - from painting scrolls to manga, which we first presented in 2009, introduced the history of yokai paintings since the Edo period. This new exhibition focuses on three-dimensional figures.
