A solo exhibition by Cuban artist Lemany Vergel (b.1970), his first show in Japan.
Many different types of strokes and color blocks co-exist in these paintings. Characteristic are the lines which have a sense of speed with an improvisational air and individual style, that we feel as if we were looking at the artist painting just in front of us, with various lines crossing each other and interweaving with one another. Some of these lines follow a diagonal pattern, with the result that the whole picture is filled with a lot of lively movement and complete harmony. In contrast to these vibrant lines and belts, the colored planes or fields appear stable as if they were an accumulation of time at the bottom of the artist’s mind. Due to the combination of the light strokes and the serene colored areas, we can feel both the liveliness and the aftereffects of his artwork.
