The great modern bunjinga (literati) painter Tessai Tomioka (1836–1924) enjoyed a close relationship with Benrido from nearly the time of its founding, entrusting the collotype studio with the covers and typesetting for his publishings and later his collected works, New Year’s cards, and family and personal photos. This exhibition celebrating the 180th anniversary of Tomioka’s birth and the 130th of Benrido’s founding presents original works Tomioka gave to Benrido along with his collections, New Year’s cards, and an array of collotype-produced materials from Tomioka’s lifetime.
