This event has ended.

To commemorate the 10th anniversary of this gallery, presented is their first side-by-side display of two murals named Okakiji-zu (Cherry Blossoms and Pheasants) from sister palaces – Ninomaru-goten Palace at Nijo-jo Castle and Honmaru-goten Palace at Nagoya-jo Castle. The murals at Nagoya-jo Castle are designated important cultural properties, and that castle’s Okakiji-zu is painted across four fusuma sliding doors that adorn the First Room of the Omoteshoin there. They were painted in 1614, 12 years before the murals of Ninomaru-goten Palace at Nijo-jo Castle. The painter is unknown, but one of several theories suggests that it was Kano Takanobu, father of Kano Naonobu, who painted the murals of the Kuroshoin of Ninomaru-goten Palace at Nijo-jo Castle, including its Okakiji-zu. A chance to enjoy an early spring with the pretty birds beneath cherry trees in full bloom.
