Shogun Ieyasu Tokugawa had a long history with Osaka Castle, the west compound of which he made his base around the time of Battle of Sekigahara. After his death in 1616, he was deified by the Imperial Court with the posthumous name Tosho Daigongen and called Shinkun (Deified Lord) as a sign of respect by the people the Edo period. With this year marking the 400th anniversary of Ieyasu Tokugawa’s death, the Osaka Castle Museum presents the Toshogu Engi Picture Scrolls and other historical materials depicting the origins of Toshogu Shrine and Tokugawa’s life, labors, and valor.
