poster for 1950s Gutai

This event has ended.

The avant-garde art collective “Gutai” was formed in 1954 and penetrated the art scene on a global level. The members of the Gutai group had a sense of unaffected and unrestricted freedom, breaking the mould of fine art and the preconceptions that came with it. Adopting the use of new materials and techniques, Gutai held uninhibited performances and open-air exhibitions that fascinated people and in the late 50s, a visit by the influential French art critic Michel Tapie introduced the movement to Europe.
Now 40 years since the groups dissolve in 1972, Ashiya City Museum of Art & History features its impressive collection of Gutai work from the 1950s.
