The Compelling Beauty of Arita Ceramics in the Age of Great International Expositions
The Museum of Ceramic Art, Hyogo
This event has ended.
The Arita region became the first place in Japan to produce ceramics in the early Edo era. These colorful and sophisticated works delighted not just the Japanese, but the European aristocracy as well. The Meiji government encouraged the Arita ceramics industry early on, leading to innovations in the art form. Beginning with the Vienna World Expo of 1873, Arita ware was met with global acclaim, as giant flower vases and other ceramics boasting inimitable detail reflected the energy of the Meiji era. Focusing on Arita ware by leading Meiji manufacturers Koransha and Seiji Gaisha, this exhibition introduces the compelling beauty of Arita ceramics with 154 works displayed at world fairs and used by the aristocracy, as well as the designs for these pieces.
