Nobuhiro Hanaoka, an artist working mainly in wood, is receiving growing attention for his distinctive sculptures.
Hanaoka’s studio process is one of carving, assembling carved off chips of wood, more carving, adding items such as clothing or books, more carving, subtracting elements, carving again, and adding other pieces. Bringing together unrelated items around him, he blurs their added meanings, values, and narratives.
