This exhibition introduces the masterpieces of celadon narcissus basins, the most outstanding wares fired at the Ru kiln, which produced celadon wares exclusively for the Chinese court during the late Northern Song dynasty (960 – 1127). Ru ware is known for its elegant tianqing or “heavenly blue” color of the glaze as well as its refined, handsome form.
This is the first and rare opportunity in which the world’s finest Ru ware narcissus basins housed in the National Palace Museum, Taipei are assembled outside Taiwan. It shows four Ru ware narcissus basins of the Northern Song dynasty, including the “Celadon Narcissus Basin with Light Bluish-Green Glaze” which can be said as “the masterpiece of the masterpieces” among the numerous Chinese ceramics. Also on display is the celadon narcissus basin of the Qing dynasty, which was modeled on the aforementioned “Celadon Narcissus Basin with Light Bluish-Green Glaze”. It was produced at the Jingdezhen official kiln under the order of the Qing emperor. Please enjoy the quintessence of Ru celadon, the astonishingly beautiful treasure cherished by the successive Chinese emperors.
