Otsu-e Exhibition
Otsu City Museum of History
This event has ended.
An exhibition of Otsu-e: popular, cheap woodblock prints that were developed in the Edo Period, mostly as souvenirs for travellers passing through Otsu in present-day Shiga Prefecture, on the Tokkaido route that connected the cities of Edo and Kyoto. The art form declined in the Meiji Period, but efforts took place to revive it from the Taisho Period by figures such as Soetsu Yanagi, the philosopher behind the Mingei movement. Modern painters who turned their hand to Otsu-e included Rosetsu Hashimoto, Seiho Takeuchi and Ryusei Kishida.
