"The Shogon of May" Exhibition

The exhibition displays the works by professors and selected graduate students of Kyoto City University, Kyoto Saga University of Arts and Kyoto University of Art and Design.
The word "shogon (dignity)", which appears in the exhibition title, originally had the meaning of displaying Buddhist statues or decorating Buddhist rooms for special occasions. However, we now use the word to signify something of splendor and power. With less Buddhist statues and rooms in the common home, along with a decline of devout Buddhist beliefs, the religious significance of the word has been subtracted from "shogon".
However, despite how a word have changed with context, it is still believed that Japanese families maintain their identity and respect for their ancestors within the household. "Shogon" is one materialization of such belief, and maybe it is possible to retain its true meaning through artists and their research.
