Emily Kame Kngwarreye, as well as being a contemporary Australian Aboriginal artist, has also been called one of the greatest abstract painters of the 20th Century. Living as she did in the desert in the middle of Australia where she was mark making over a lifetime and having lived in a place where she had little contact with the West, her work has been greeted with astonishment. In the context of present-day modernity her experience should be considered as nothing short of genius.
While Emily's cultural narratives found expression in the batik medium in the 70s, it was her painting of over 3000 acrylic paintings on canvas over a period of 8 years that gained her so much recognition. These works are invariably connected to the abstract expressionism of Pollock. However her major 8 meter painting Big Yam Dreaming (1995) suggests that her work reflects broader visions of her experience within the natural environment where she lives.
