Atsuhiko Misawa (born in Kyoto, 1961) is one of the most remarkable international artists from Japan. After completing an MFA in sculpture at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, he exhibited the "Animal" series made with wood in 2000. Bringing life-size animals out of a camphor tree, he won the 20th Hirakushi Denchu Prize in 2001, and the 15th Takashimaya Charitable Trust for Art and Culture Prize in 2005. His wild animals like tigers, giraffes and elephants, as well as adorable animals like dogs and cats, charm the audiences. The marks ingrained in the wood's surfaces tell the difficulties of using the chisel and add an impression of the strength and tension. The animals become pop figures but contain a primitive and pure sculptural expression. Misawa's unique world is constructed by fusing flexibility and solidness, contemporary and tradition, boldness and precision.
This is his first exhibition at the museum, and introduces the "Animal" series including new works. The exhibition features sculptures, drawings and collaborated works with Yoshitomo Nara and graf. Misawa's manner of approaching traditional wood curving with contemporary sensibility expands the new possibilities of sculpture.
