Photographer Alfred Stieglitz is known as the "father of contemporary art";¥ he organized Photo-Secession, produced the Camera Work magazine, and founded the 291 Gallery. In 1913, when Stieglitz was in the midst of his successful art career, the Armory Show was held in New York. The show took the initiative to introduce European Avant-Garde art to the US. As a result, the American Avant-Garde scene was highly influenced by the show and Stieglitz became actively involved. The seminar will look at Stieglitz's life and what it meant to be in New York in the year 1913, when the focus of contemporary art was shifting from Europe to the US.

Session 1: "Stieglitz in the History of Photography"
Session 2: "Stieglitz's Lifework: The Camera and 291 Gallery"
Session 3: "New York, 1913"
*After the lecture, dinner will be served. A guest speaker will talk during the meal.
