The National Museum of Art, Osaka opened its door in 1977 as a national museum specialized in contemporary art after inheriting the Expo Museum of Fine Arts facility, which had been built for Expo '70, the world exposition that was held in Osaka in 1970. In the thirty years that have passed, the National Museum of Art, Osaka has presented a wide variety of special exhibitions, but more than anything else, have set out to build a full collection. Beginning with next to nothing, save a ceramic mural by Joan Miró, the museum has currently amassed a store of approximately 5,700 paintings, prints, sculptures, and photographs.
This exhibition features selected 400 works of foreign and Japanese contemporary artists shown by making full use of the two expansive exhibition rooms and the surrounding open spaces in the underground museum.

Impressive collection of art in almost every media. Large and small pieces from the U.S., Europe, Japan and other countries. This is a very comprehensive collection with a broad scope, and of excellent quality. Of particular interest for foreign residents is the abundant representation of Japanese artists, which helps us learn more about the development of contemporary art in Japan.
The exhibition is packed with surrealists, dadaists, cubists, minimalists, abstract expressionists, pop artists, video artists, photography, kinetic works, textile works, ceramics, sculpture in wood, clay, plastic, acrylic, stone, bronze, steel, iron and glass. The pieces cover a period of about 100 years from Picasso's Blue Period, to recent works in photography and ceramics.
This exhibition is one way in which the National Museum of Art, Osaka is creating a new way to get young families closer to art. Both floors of the museum are used to house this extensive collections of works, which comprises just about 7% of the Museum's collection of 5,700 works of art.
