"Elegance in the Lords of Kii" Exhibition

In the Edo period Kii Han (fiefdom) was one of the three domains connected to the Tokugawa family and as a region linked deeply to the shogunate it was placed in a strong position nationally. Due to this, successive generations of Kii Han lords pursued not only political influence, but also cultural knowledge and refinement.
The first lord of the domain was Yorinobu Tokugawa, and his much-loved possessions and heirlooms bequeathed by his father Ieyasu can be said to be precious assets revealing the height of cultural attainment. Further, among the generations of Kii lords there are those who produced their own calligraphy, painting and ceramics. Out of these treasures, there are many that were influenced by China and the west; an image of the lords as forward-thinking, with their sights turned towards the rest of the world, rises up with these works.
This exhibition will focus on the pieces from temples connected to the Kii Han and will introduce the cultural activities of the generations of domain lords.
