"Ihei Kimura's Paris" Exhibition
Osaka Nikon Salon
This event has ended.
This exhibition is of the photographs taken by Ihei Kimura with a Nikon S and Leica M3 during his two highly productive trips to Paris in 1954 and 1955. In addition to monochrome film he also employed color, which at the time was rare outside of commercial photography, demonstrating his attempts to practice a new photographic expressiveness. Further, at the time for most people traveling overseas was extremely difficult due to restrictions on carrying foreign currency. However, Nikon (formerly Nippon Kogaku K.K.), under the pretext of promoting camera exports, was able to prepare currency and send Kimura abroad.
In Paris Kimura visited Henri Cartier-Bresson and through his introduction he befriended Robert Doisneau, lover of the Paris underworld. It is said that this greatly influenced Kimura's work from then on.
This exhibition will display around 100 color prints from Nikon's collection.
