The year 645 was a year of overwhelming change in Japan, when the first religious repressions began to spread through the country. According to the Nihon Shoki a man named Ofube no O championed a religious cult at this time dedicated to the larvae of the swallow-tailed butterfly “Tokoyo no mushi”, gaining popularity by promoting its ability to ordain richness and long life. This led to the “Tokoyo no mushi” incident in which the great figure Hata no Kawakatsu tracked Ofube no O down and defeated him. Through this story Yoshiichi Hara gained great fascination with this insect, germinating in his mind to now be released in a series of 60 black and white photographs.
