Masato Seto “Cesium/Cs-137”
Osaka Nikon Salon
This event has ended.
On that fateful day 35kg of cesium were released into the Earth’s atmosphere, with the majority of this falling upon land in Fukushima prefecture. That is half the amount released during the Chernobyl disaster and while the chemical properties of this radioactive substance are scientifically known, its impact on humans and nature is still largely unknown.
For the people of Fukushima the fallout from the nuclear disaster is like snow, with the radiation hot spots being talked of as the ice and snow left upon the road. The artist Masato Seto has taken it upon himself to enter the mountains and forests of Fukushima and attempt to capture a photographic image of the invisible cesium, visualizing that which is unseen by the human eye in a series of 20 black and white photographs.
