Exhibition of Meiji ornamental textiles newly-acquired by Kiyomizu Sannenzaka Museum, returning to Japan from touring exhibitions in US and UK, as well as other gems from overseas collections.
In the Meiji period, Japan began exporting huge quantities of craft items such as makie lacquerware, ceramics and cloisonné. Ornamental textiles made in Kyoto became some of Japan’s best-known export items: garnering attention at world expositions, and soon becoming a must-have in many Victorian homes. The makers of these stunning textiles, such as Chiso and Takashimaya, truly stretched the boundaries of the art, often recreating paintings, such as those of contemporary Japanese artists like Seiho Takeuchi and Keinen Imao, or even Western images, in silk thread. Sadly, many works that came to adorn the princely residences of European royals and high-ranking politicians have been damaged or destroyed, making this a rare opportunity to view some well-preserved examples of this fabulous art.
