Known as the eccentric painter of the Edo period Matabei Iwasa(1578-1650) is recognized as one of the forefathers of ukiyo-e. Working across the regions of Kyoto, Echizen and Edo he came to settle for 20 years in Fukui where he produced many of his major works. In this exhibition, drawing on the exchange between art museums through a regional network, the world of Iwasa is opened up anew, with works from the Fukui Fine Arts Museum and the Mie Prefectural Art Museum unveiling the artistic efforts of this significant figure.
