The Giwajiden, an account of Japan in the 3rd century writes, “There are no cattle or horses.” Absent in the era of Himiko, horses spread rapidly across Japan in Kofun period (300–538), becoming revered as holy entities and an indispensable part of people’s lives. This exhibition explains how horses came to and transformed Japan.
