poster for The Work of the Carpenter

This event has ended.

Wakayama is significant as a site of historical temple and shrine architecture. This exhibition introduces the carpenters of Wakayama and their architecture through tosatsu, a kind of wooden sign that contains information about the building: its name, the year it was built, the names of those who funded its construction and who built it. Also on display will be building materials, ancient documents and picture scrolls associated with the work of temple and shrine carpenters.
