The fall of the shogunate and opening of Japan in the mid 19th century led to the rapid decline in demand among Japanese for traditional crafts, seen as irrelevant in a society keen to Westernise. Overseas, however, these items, which included swords, netsuke and inro, were highly prized.
This exhibition displays Japanese crafts that were created for export to the West during the Meiji period, with a focus on Shibayama lacquer or ivory works decorated with semiprecious shell, ivory or tortoiseshell inlay; and Soyama works in which pieces of blue shell and gold are set on lacquerware.
