This event has ended.

The radical designs of textile planner Junichi Arai (1932-) combine respect for traditions of hand craft with innovative technology, drawing on his experiences in the family weaving business to evolve new forms of textile one after the other. He boldly reveals the essence of the various natural materials employed in each work, while utilizing computers to create complex patterns in jacquard cloth, incorporating a wire weave of silver and gold into transparent film further subjected to chemical processes and playing upon the coexistence of reflection and transparency.

The textiles of Junichi Arai ever continue to reach beyond established frames and bring new surprise and wonder. Between the 1970s-90s he joined in an array of collaborations with the likes of Kuwakubo Rei and Issey Miyake bringing his work to an international platform and going on to receive an honorary PhD from the Royal College of Art, UK. This exhibition reflects upon the 60 years of Junichi Arai’s career with a collection of around 50 works, including dynamic installations alongside ethnic folk costume which has proved to be an inspiration to Arai over the decades.
