Ben Shahn “The Magic of Lines”

Ben Shahn (1898–1969) learned drawing and typography while working in a lithography studio in New York, where his impoverished family migrated to from present-day Lithuania when Shan was eight. He later applied the skills he picked up there in his graphic design career. Depicting stories of human sorrow in distinctive lines that seem to be drawn with shaking hands, Shahn had a major influence on the rising stars of a younger generation such as Andy Warhol, as well as many post-war Japanese artists and graphic designers. Known for their sharp but humanizing perspective, his works were inspired by his experiences in downtown New York and the cultural phenomena he encountered there, from Eastern European culture rooted in the spirituality of the Old Testament, to the persecution of Jews, to the lives of migrant workers. Around 300 of Shahn’s works owned by the Marunuma Art Park Collection are on display, including paintings, drawings, and posters.
