Tai Nakatani Exhibition
Mie Prefectural Art Museum
This event has ended.
Exhibition to commemorate 20 years since the death of one of the most highly regarded artists of post-war yoga (Western-style) painting, Tai Nakatani (1903-1993). Nakatani pursued his career as a painter at the tender age of 20, rising to fame as the recipient of the Japan Art Academy awards in the late 1930’s and early 40’s. Nakatani’s works are characterised by muted colouring and solid compositions, without a hint of eccentricity. The labourer, including coal miners and potters, is a recurring motif, the plight of which Nakatani approached with empathy and humanity. Among the works on display will be those never before shown to the public.
