William Kentridge “The Refusal of Time”
Former Rissei Elementary School
This event has ended.
As a pre-event to the “Parasophia: Kyoto International Festival of Contemporary Culture 2015” the former Rissei Elementary School plays host to a large scale exhibition of work from the South African master, William Kentridge. This epic film installation is the result of a long running dialogue between Kentridge and Harvard University’s scientific historian Peter Galison and realized through a series of workshops with South African dancer Dada Masilo. It enwraps us in the contradictions of time as a man made measurement which we simultaneously struggle to escape from, while pointing to the fact that we are forever pursuing the definition of time, just as time appears to define us. Made up of 6 sections this work is a milestone for Kentridge and our current understanding of time and since having been unveiled at Documenta 13, the series has been rapidly acquired by various renowned museum collections, with section 5 and 6 becoming part of the Japanese Ishikawa Collection(Okayma) whose cooperation has enabled this exhibition.
