Tessai Tomioka (1836-1924) wrote a multitude of letters throughout his long life. In an exhibition to commemorate 90 years since his death, the private correspondence between Tomioka and his friends and acquaintances are shared, giving a glimpse into Tomioka’s concerns and personal tendencies. In addition, the changes through time in Tomioka’s penmanship can be followed, such as the more dynamic brush stokes that are evident in both the paintings and calligraphic work from his later years. The letters are displayed alongside some of Tomioka’s masterpieces.
