Born in the northern territory of Mozambique as a member of the Makonde people, Fidelis moved to Mtwara, Tanzania as a child and took up sculpture in 1972. Later moving to Dar es Salaam he began to pursue his art practice professionally at Nyumba ya Sanaa (a house of artists), and continues this practice to today developing a unique style and texture of sculpture carved from ebony.
