Kichu’s Sengoku History: The Castle Towers of Kinokuni

The medieval period in Japan saw the construction of castle towers across the country, and there are thought to have been hundreds in Wakayama Prefecture alone. From both their remains and excavation research, more and more is being learned about these structures, which served as the operational bases of their regions. In the Muromachi and Sengoku periods, samurai clans including the Hatakeyamas, the Yukawas, and the Tamakis centered their activities around castle towers spread across the Kihoku and Kichu regions. This special exhibition introduces these towers and their societies with ancient documents and other materials.
