Shimpei Shigemoto has a special name for the plants that grow in city crevices, which he classifies as “machikusa” (city grass). An expert on machikusa, Shigemoto recently concluded a year-long project in which he traveled around the country photographing Japanese machikusa, and has created a field guide tracing his journey. Photographs and essays from this book are on display, offering a look at the cities of Japan from the perspective of their native machikusa.
