Naniwa Shashin Kurabu, Japan’s oldest photography club, celebrates the 110th anniversary of its founding this year with its 85th exhibition. Over the course of its long history, the club has seen massive earthquakes, typhoons, and other natural disasters, a number of wars, and profound changes in society. While absorbing the impacts of these events, it has remained true to its earnest pursuit of photography, driven to develop emerging forms of photography while remaining rooted in a golden age of tableau-ism. Beginners and veterans alike improve polish their skills together at monthly meetings. Their evocative works are now on display.
